What it is, in plain words
A straight pipe wrench for gripping round pipe, rod and threaded fittings: the sort of job where a spanner slips and an adjustable spanner has nothing to hold on to. At 14 inches (350 mm) it opens up to 50 mm, which covers the pipe sizes most people meet around a house.
- Length350 mm (14 in)
- Jaw capacityUp to 50 mm (2 in)
- Weight1.25 kg
The body is forged steel with a painted handle and a hook jaw; the jaws are hardened and serrated and bite harder the more you pull. A knurled nut moves the jaw and can be set with your thumb. A hole in the end of the handle lets you hang it on a hook.
The serrations mark anything they grip, so use this wrench on pipe and rough fittings, not on chrome taps or finished nuts. If a fitting should not twist, hold it with a second wrench.

Needed to free a stuck galvanised fitting under the sink and this bit into it and turned it with no slipping. Heavy, solid, the jaws are sharp. Wiped it down afterwards and hung it up by the hole in the handle.
The shop repliedThank you, Carlos. A stuck fitting is just what it is made for. — Widgettrove

My dad has one like it from the 80s and this feels the same. The adjusting nut moves smoothly with a thumb. A bit of paint came off the handle near the nut after a week, but that is not a worry.

Used it with a second wrench to hold a fitting still while I turned the other. Worked a treat. It marks chrome, so I only use it on rough fittings.
The shop repliedExactly right, Viktor. Thanks for writing. — Widgettrove

Good wrench, heavy. I wanted the jaws to open a bit wider than 50 mm for a bigger pipe, but that was my mistake, the size is on the page. For normal house pipes it is perfect.
The shop repliedThank you for being so fair, Agnieszka. — Widgettrove customer care
